How to Enjoy Your Work Day, Every Day
This Monday is national “Have Fun at Work Day”. Employees and employers alike are encouraged let loose, whether that’s playing music, bringing in some extra special food and drink, or ditching a productive afternoon in favour of office games, it’s all about having “fun”. We know that not everybody is willing to swap efficiency for entertainment, and sometimes it’s just not possible to take the afternoon off. This is exactly why we’ve compiled our top tips for making every day “have fun at work day”, or you know, at least make every day a little bit more bearable…
- Prioritise Your To-Do List
You might not feel your most productive the moment you clock on, but studies show that hitting the hardest tasks on your list first actually sets you up to have a more productive day. A famous Mark Twain quote explains that “If you eat a frog first thing in the morning, that will probably be the worst thing you do all day”, and while we’re not suggesting you develop a taste for amphibians, if you start out with your most dreaded task, the day can only get better. An afternoon of easy, more creative tasks definitely sounds good to us.
- Make the Most of Your Lunch Break
By this, we mean really make the most of your lunch break. Switch off, go outside and forget about your emails, because this is your hour. Eating lunch at your desk is a recipe for overworking yourself, and that can lead to resenting your job… Not fun, not fun at all. In order to have fun at work long term, you need to take a break from it every now and then.
- Beat the 3pm Slump
Everybody is familiar with the slump. For 9-5 workers, it hits around 3pm, but it’s just as real a phenomenon for shift workers. That time that lies somewhere between your break and home time, when the hour seems to drag on and all you can think about is getting home and curling up with a blanket. To beat this, give yourself a treat. Whether it’s a big fat slice of chocolate cake, a ten-minute candy-crush break or one of those luxurious coffees from the café downstairs (the instant kind does not count), you can get through this.
- If You Can’t Love Your Job, Love the People
Sometimes, co-workers are a nightmare, but sometimes they’re really, really great. Make time to get to know your workmates, and it might be the makings of a really enjoyable working week. Studies show a direct link between those who get on with their colleagues and job satisfaction, so reach out, you might just find your new bestie.
- Make Your Day About More than Just Work
We completely understand, not everybody loves their job, but everybody needs money. If you find yourself dreading the hours you spend at work, make the hours you spend away from work the main event! Try to do something you love each night, even if that thing is just curling up with a really good book or taking a luxurious bath You are more than your career, and there are plenty of hours in the day – use them! When your nights and weekends are filled with fun, it won’t matter quite so much that your 9-5 isn’t.
How do you make the work-day that little bit more fun? We’d love to hear from you, drop us a message on any of our socials, or let us know in the comments!
